Hambantota is a fast developing city in the south of Sri Lanka. It is now home to the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport.

It takes less time to reach Hambantota nowadays thanks to the Southern Highway. There are many places of interest to visit in Hambantota such as the picturesque small fishing village of Kirinda with its charming beach and interesting history. The Tissa Tank dates back some 2300 years built during the ancient Sri Lankan Ruhuna kingdom period. It is a great place to get a feel for Sri Lanka`s history while also being a bird lover`s paradise. Hambantota is also the location of Sri Lanka`s first dry zone botanical garden in the village of Mirijjawila. Further places of interest include the Madunagala Hot water wells and hermitage, the Bundala Bird Sanctuary and a little further away the Yala and Udawalawe National Parks. Sri Lanka`s largest salt pans are located in Hambantota plus visitors to the area will be able to see the majestic windmills as the wind farms are also located in the area.
