Located 80 miles north of Colombo, Puttalam is a small town situated along the shores of the scenic Puttalam Lagoon, the largest lagoon of the Island. The town is the capital of Puttalam District of the North Western Province and the area is popular for fishing, prawn farming as well as coconut cultivation.

Historically the area has played a significant role since Prince Vijaya`s landing is estimated to be around the coastal area between Puttalam and Mannar. Today, Puttalam is a budding tourist destination due to its lovely setting in the lagoon and also due to the easy access it provides for those wishing to explore the treasures of the ocean waters in the area.
