Tissamaharama, locally known as Tissa, is a south-eastern Sri Lankan town which had been the capital of Ruhuna, a 3rd century BC Sinhalese Kingdom. The area features a few relics from the past glorious days with the large Tissa Wawe, a tank boasting a highly developed irrigation system, and the prominent and beautiful `stupa` of the Tissa Maha Dagoba, being the main attractions portraying the glorious culture the city boasted many centuries ago.
Today this attractive little town serves as an ideal stopover for those visiting the Yala National Park and the Katharagama Temple.
