Mahiyanganaya is not well known among tourists, yet has many historically and religiously important places of interest worth visiting. Though the area is predominantly known for its Veddha population, an indigenous group of people believed to be the original inhabitants of the island, Mahiyanganaya also has a strong Buddhist heritage with ancient temples well worth visiting.
Mahaweli, Sri Lanka`s longest river also flows through Mahiyanganaya. There is also the Sorabora tank which is a man made historical wonder and by travelling a little further you can visit the Wasgamuwa Wildlife Sanctuary.
